Multnomah County Library is the oldest public library west of the Mississippi, with a history that reaches back to 1864. Today, Central Library, 14 neighborhood libraries and one cooperative library make up a library system that houses a collection of almost 2 million books and other library materials. As Oregon's largest public library, Multnomah County Library serves over one-fifth of the state's population. Multnomah County Library opened two new branches in fall 2001 – Northwest Library and Fairview-Columbia Library. New facilities for the Sellwood-Moreland and Hollywood libraries will open in February and May 2002, respectively, and the new Hillsdale building is under construction. An additional new library is also being planned for the North Interstate Corridor
