The North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro has been involved in the recovery effort since 1993, prior to the opening of the red wolf habitat in the park's North American exhibit region. In addition to the public display, the zoo has an off-exhibit breeding facility for red wolves that has provided animals for the reintroduction effort. The zoo also has several staff members involved in the national Red Wolf Species Survival Program and its veterinarians provide medical care for the wild red wolf population.
