The Philadelphia Zoo has supported the Kangaroo Island Echidna Project since 1995 with funding for field work and a very successful Zoo captive breeding program. The Philadelphia Zoo echidna husbandry research involved hundreds of hours of observations throughout the year conducted by small mammal house lead keeper Todd Sinander. Todd's work has resulted in successful Zoo reproduction of echidnas since 2000. The Zoo has also supported long-term ecological studies of echidnas in the wild, working with Dr. Peggy Rismiller, echidna expert and researcher at the Pelican Lagoon Research Centre on Kangaroo Island, Australia.
