HCSC, a mutual legal reserve company, operates through its three divisions: Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico. HCSC began in 1936 as Hospital Service Corporation with the Blue Cross symbol officially adopted in 1939. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas merged with HCSC in 1998. HCSC acquired Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico in 2001. Currently, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico, independent licensees of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, provide health insurance coverage for approximately 8.5 million people.
