The mission of USM's Writing Center is to help student writers, particularlyundergraduates, develop proficiency by offering professional assistance with anydifficulties they may face in coping with the demands of university writing. Since research shows that writers build general knowledge about writing bylearning how to negotiate the requirements of specific writing projects, suchassistance takes the form of one-on-one conferencing with trained writingtutors. The Writing Center is not, however, a remedial service:though the majority of those seeking our services are enrolled in first-yearwriting courses, we work with more experienced writers, as
