York House School was founded in 1932 by seven visionary women - Mrs. Lena Cotsworth Clarke, Mrs. Janet Mitchell, Mrs. Grace Faris, Mrs. Virginia Moore Mackay, Mrs. Marie Gerhardt-Olly, Mrs. Gladys Jopling and Mrs. Gretchen Hyland. Named after the home town of the first headmistress Mrs. Clarke, York House School took as its motto Not For Ourselves Alone and chose green and gold as its colours. The Founders' goals were: To give every York House girl a true sense of values, a measuring stick by which she can evaluate the various experiences life brings her.
