Sandstrom Products Company was founded in 1946 to develop and market paints and various high performance industrial coatings. The company later became involved in the development and manufacturing of new types of lubricants (solid film lubricants also known as dry film lubricants) which were critically needed by the military. Robert V. Sandstrom, founder of the company, received the Department of Army Outstanding Civilian Service Award in 1968 (awarded for the first time in Rock Island Arsenal history) for his patriotic contributions to the military services in the development of these lubricants.
